Leeds United
- Saturday 22/01/05
It
was the first week in May in 2001 that Brighton and Hove Albion
won the Division Three title, after beating Chesterfield 1-0
at Withdean. It was that same week that Leeds United took
on Valencia for a place in the Champions League Final - one
step away from being the best team in Europe. In the 4 years
that have past, Brighton have gone from strength to strength,
while Leeds have slipped from that place in the elite. It
was with great excitement, and arrousement, that Witham and
McCarthy were to see these 2 clubs clash at the famous Elland
Road stadium. |

 |
Mode
of Transport:
The only way to travel, it was the Costa Express
that did the job, as we mounted Liz for the long
trip north to Elland Road, on Johns coach. |
 |
Team:
A 3-5-2 line up of: Yelldell, Virgo, Hinshlewood,
Butters; Reid, Oatway, Carpenter, Harding, Mayo;
Knight, McCammon. |
 |
Kit:
Leeds wore there famous colours of all white,
while Brighton chose the dark blue Palookaville
number. David Yelldell made his debut in goal,
in the first half choosing the yellow 'Tour de
France' jersey, and in the second becoming a Brighton
legend, when he appeared in the infamous pink
top. |
 |
Mark
McGhee's Attire:
His traditional anorak was worn due to the cold
Yorkshire weather, along with the normal suit.
We could not determine the colour of the shirt
however. |
 |
Weather:
Sunny but with a chilling Yorkshire wind. |
 |
Stadium
Rating:
Leeds has the biggest cantaliver structure for
a sports stadium in Europe, that being the impressive
East Stand. It had an old touch to it from the
outside, which gave it a homely feeling, and the
view was fine. 8/10 |
 |
Food
Rating:
Hotdogs inside the ground were rather tasteful,
despite the fact they were extremely resembling
of plastic. 5/10 |
 |
Entertainment:
Cheerleaders were on show inside the ground, although
they only performed in front of the East Stand.
We were in no position to see the 'Big Screen'
either. 2/10 |
 |
Friendliness
of Locals:
Very friendly, but very arrogant. Many were under
the illusion they were still one of the best teams
in Europe, with comments like 'highlight of your
life' when we beat Leeds 1-0 at Withdean. One
young chap was extremely nice though, and directed
us to the players entrance in a broad, Yorkshire
accent. Would score higher if it wasn't for there
delusions of grandeur. 7/10 |
 |
Standard
of Local Females:
A few were knocking around outside that were rather
tasty. 6/10 |
 |

Attention:
Not present. |
 |
Match
Report:
Brighton came from 1-0 down to gain a deserved
point at Elland Road. Clark Carlisle opened the
scoring with a fine effort, before Guy Butters
pulled one back in the final 10 minutes of the
game. Charlie Oatway was then sent off for Brighton,
but they managed to hold on for the point, mainly
thanks to a superb performance from debutant David
Yelldell in goal. |
 |
Thought
of the Day:
Witham provided this to ponder on: "God,
I can't imagine anything worse than waking up
next to Kylie Minogue. She's old enough to be
my Mum, she's got a face like a dogs arse, and
to top it all off she's Australian" |
