Colchester United - Monday 13/04/09

Following Saturday's defeat against Swindon, Brighton really were up against it in the race to avoid the drop into League Two. Defeat in their first visit at the Westons Home Stadium would be a massive blow, especially with former captain Dean Hammond now leading Colchester. Many fans point to the departure of Hammond, who left the club under a cloud last season, as the catalyst for the current predicament, and the old skipper could have a huge say in where his ex-club would be playing next season.

Mode of Transport:
Disaster. Rumble's young lady friend Jenny Roberts was charged with driving, but joy turned to confussion when the back suspension gave way under the weight of McCarthy and Potter. This meant taking a taxi from a small village, Hatfield Peverel, where the car was left, to Colchester. The journey home involved a bus, train, rail replacement coach, tube, and further train.
Team:
The potato named a 4-4-2 line up with: Kuipers, Whing, Elphick, Virgo, Borrowdale; Loft, Fraser, Dicker, Cox; Hart, Owusu.
Kit:
Colchester wore their home kits of blue and white striped shirts, blue shorts and white socks. Brighton appeared in their away kit of yellow and navy striped shirts, navy shorts and navy socks. Michel Kuipers was present in his delightful green shirt with black and white trim, black shorts and black socks.
Russell Slade's Attire:
Mr Slade was in his seemingly normal match day attire of training jumper, training trousers and baseball cap.
Weather:
Reasonably warm throughout the day, although slightly overcast at times.
Stadium Rating:
The Westons Home Stadium is built quite literally in the middle of nowhere. Opened this season, it consists of four small, seated stands. Three of these are identical and reasonably sized, while the main stand contains some form of strange form of strange balcony above a row of executive boxes. 7/10
Food Rating:
The hotdog's were extremely delightful, although the lack of hot sausage rolls angered Potter. 6/10
Entertainment:
Cheerleaders were on offer at half time, and appeared to be of the attractive variety. 7/10
Friendliness of Locals:
We arrived rather late in Colchester thanks to transport cock up, and as such did not get to experience many locals. 5/10
Standard of Local Females:
There were very few attractive females in attendance, which was even more disappointing given Essex's notoriety for producing slags. 2/10
Steward Rating:
Not very good at all. Ejected several fans for standing, they were completely over the top, with one threatening Rumble with obtaining a policeman to arrest him in the bus queue for a simple case of street urination. 1/10
Flag Attention:
The new Crocs Welsh flag was not taken to todays game
Match Report:
The survival dream lived on following a 1-0 win over Colchester. With the hosts having nothing to play for, it was no surprise that it was the Albion who were more up for the game, and a Lloyd Owusu header from a free-kick was enough to settle the game and give a massive three points to the Seagulls for whom Michel Kuipers was rarely troubled
Thought of the Day:
Mark Potter is so overweight that the suspension of a Ford KA is unable to take his weight.
