One Game from the Top Flight - the 1991 Play-Off Final
Twenty years ago on June 2nd
1991, Brighton and Hove Albion found themselves one game
away from promotion to the top flight of English football.
Having qualified for the Division Two play-offs despite
having a negative goal difference thanks to Dean Wilkins
last minute free-kick against Ipswich Town in the last game
of the season at The Goldstone, Barry Lloyd's team defeated
Millwall 4-1 at home and 2-1 at The Den to set up a Wembley
Final with Neil Warnock's Notts County.
Had they of won the game
they would have competed in the last ever season of Division
One being the pinnacle of football in the country before
the advent of the Premier League. As it was, it was Notts
County who triumphed 3-1 with the Seagull's goal coming
from that man again, Wilkins, in front of 59,940. The
Albion went onto be relegated the next season.
Here are a collection of
photos we found in the We Are Brighton archive of the
day. With Gus Poyet backed by Tony Bloom, hopefully we'll
be adding a successful promotion to the top flight to
these pages sometime soon
