Tim Krul signs for Norwich City

There’s transfer news involving somebody with a Dutch connection and Brighton and Hove Albion, but it isn’t quite the breaking story we are all waiting for.

Last seasons number two goalkeeper Tim Krul has signed for Championship side Norwich City on a free transfer.

The former Dutch international has signed a two year deal with the Canaries after turning down the offer of a new contract at the Amex.

Krul played just five games in cup competitions for the Albion last season. He arrived from Newcastle United in the final throes of the summer transfer window, having previously worked under Chris Hughton at St James’ Park.

Hughton was keen to keep him for another season, especially with Maty Ryan set to miss up to seven games when on Asian Cup duty with Australia in January.

That would’ve given Krul a run of games but he wanted the chance to be a number one for an entire campaign. He hasn’t played regular first team football since the 2014-15 season and at 30 years of age, he should be hitting his goalkeeping prime.

It’s understandable then that Krul turned down the Albion’s offer of a new deal, as did number three goalkeeper Niki Maenpaa who is yet to sign for a new club.

Krul and Maenpaa’s places as second and third choices have been taken by David Button and Jason Steele respectively. The jury remains out on whether those two are anywhere near the level of the men they’ve been replaced, although Button did give an encouraging performance in the 1-1 draw at Charlton Athletic.

Krul should be a good fit for Norwich who need to replace Angus Gunn. The highly rated England under 21 goalkeeper spent last season on loan at Carrow Road from Manchester City. Gunn has since signed for Southampton for £13.5m.
