Brighton 0-0 Burnley: Player ratings as Albion fail to beat Clarets

If you fail to beat the Premier League’s bottom team at home – as Brighton did when drawing 0-0 with Burnley – then you would normally expect some ghastly player ratings as a result.

The Albion do things differently though. Yes, it was another disappointing result against Sean Dyche’s strugglers but the performance was still relatively encouraging and in Adam Lallana and Tariq Lamptey, Brighton had the best and second best players on the pitch.

Nobody needs reminding that what is letting the Albion down majorly is their inability to score. Nothing reflects that better than the fact that Neal Maupay scored just 5.08 in our player ratings. How is that for an ego check for a player who is apparently getting a little too big for boots?

Here is how you rated the Albion players for Brighton 0-0 Burnley.

Maty Ryan – 6.15
Returned to the starting line up at the expense of Robert Sanchez who not only surrendered the number one shirt but wasn’t even deemed worthy of a place on the bench by Potter. Ryan was relieved to see a cross from Matt Lowton rattle the bar rather than dropping in and he struggled at times with a barrage of aerial balls into the box. For the first time in his Albion career, he is no longer an automatic pick.

Adam Webster – 5.62
His form seems to have deserted him since being handed the captain’s armband in Lewis Dunk’s absence. One of those evenings where every single pass he seemed to make went straight to a Burnley play rather than its intended target.

Ben White – 6.46
Another new position for the versatile young man as he lined up as the central defender in the back three. An accomplished performance in which he nearly had an assist with a beautiful chipped ball which sent Danny Welbeck away to be denied by Nick Pope.

Joel Veltman – 6.38
Has not put a foot wrong in the three games he has come into the starting line up for. Solid if unspectacular sums him up and that is exactly what he did against Burnley.

Tariq Lamptey – 7.46
The interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs keeps coming. This week it was Atletico Madrid who were rumoured to be taking a serious look and with performances like this, it is hardly a surprise. A score of 7.46 was the second highest of our Brighton 0-0 Burnley player ratings with the only mark against his name being the chance he put off target in the first minute.

Yves Bissouma – 6.69
Sat a little deeper than he has done so far in 2020-21 to allow Pascal Gross and Adam Lallana to get forward. Used the ball well in a disciplined performance to remind everyone that he can hold as well as he can pour forward.

Adam Lallana – 7.77
He was the best player on the pitch as Brighton drew 0-0 with Burnley and that is reflected in his place at the top of the ratings. There are shades of Vicente in the way that he makes the game look easy, sees things other do not and is quite clearly a level above anyone else in the Albion squad.

Dan Burn – 5.62
Looked a square-peg-in-round hole solution as a traditional left back last season. Needless to say, he looked even more unassured as a wing back. You cannot fault his effort, but Brighton need Solly March back as a matter of urgency if Potter is to play 3-4-1-2.

Pascal Gross – 6.54
There are some fans who will try and tell you Gross was useless against Burnley. The fact that he was the highest rated player of the Albion’s front three suggests otherwise. The combined crat and guile which he and Lallana brought to the party was the major reason why Brighton managed 19 shots against a Burnley side who are very strong defensively.

Danny Welbeck – 6.46
We were impressed so it is a bit of a surprise to see him pick up such a low score in the player ratings. It may have something to do with the fact that he missed Brighton’s two best chances, but that was more to do with fine saves from Pope then him being hopelessly wasteful. With match fitness and sharpness under his belt, you suspect those opportunities will be taken in the future.

Neal Maupay – 5.08
How a player in the form which the French striker is in can have an ego or be getting carried away with his success is bewildering. Returned after the disciplinary incident which saw him ruled out at Spurs, only to be the Albion’s lowest scoring player in the ratings.
