Luton 4-0 Brighton: Terrible player ratings befitting a terrible night

“We were terrible.” Not my words, but those of Lewis Dunk describing went wrong for the Albion at Kenilworth Road. It is an assessment backed up by the Luton 4-0 Brighton player ratings, which are easily the worst we have ever recorded.

Billy Gilmour was the only player to score higher than four. Jason Steele, Pervis Estupinan and Facundo Buonanotte all managed the impressive feat of dipping below three.

One Seagulls supporter even decided to go off-piste and give Roberto De Zerbi a rating. Changing goalkeepers (again), not being able to adapt to the Hatters’ approach and playing a back three were reasons enough apparently to score De Zerbi a two.

Something worth considering if anyone from the Liverpool board of directors is reading this as part of the due diligence process in finding Jurgen Klopp’s successor.

Not for the faint of heart, here are your Luton Town 4-0 Brighton player ratings.

Jason Steele – 2.88
A mighty fall from grace for a man who was in the Brighton 0-0 Wolves player ratings top two on his previous Premier League appearance. Might have done better for the first goal and the second goal was 100 percent his fault as he came charging from his line with no hope of getting the ball like a man who had bombed too much speed before kick off.

Jan Paul van Hecke – 3.13
Was not at fault for any of the four Luton goals, which is about as good as it got for any member of the Albion defence.

Lewis Dunk – 3.63
Elijah Adebayo left Dunk utterly bamboozled in a way no other Premier League centre forward has managed apart from Aleksandar Mitrovic. The Albion captain and Steele were equally culpable for the opener, setting the tone for what was to come.

Igor Julio – 3.88
All three Luton goals came down the Albion’s left channel, which is where Igor and Pervis Estupinan were meant to be patrolling. Something of a surprise to see him scored the best Albion defender in the Luton 4-0 Brighton ratings.

James Milner – 3.00
Lasted only 20 minutes before injury struck. Probably a blessing in disguise as the pace and relentless pressing deployed by the Hatters would have caused the veteran plenty of problems.

Pascal Gross – 3.38
Luton never allowed Gross or Billy Gilmour to settle and dictate play. The Seagulls’ midfield duo instead found themselves drawn into a physical battle which they were never going to win; rather like when Aston Villa put six goals past Brighton back in September.

BILLY GILMOUR – 4.00
The best of a very bad bunch.

Pervis Estupinan – 2.38
Should have stopped the cross for the first goal. Went walkabout for the second. Gave the ball away in the build up to the third. Hauled at half time. Other than that, did alright.

Facundo Buonanotte – 2.50
Not really a night to be trying tricks, flicks and going to ground at every opportunity. Found the physically of Luton too much to deal with.

Danny Welbeck – 3.63
Came closest to scoring of any Brighton player with two chances in the first half. Could not quite connect to a Joao Pedro cross drilled low and hard into the box and then dragged a shot just wide.

Joao Pedro – 3.38
His withdrawal with injury was the icing on top of a shit covered cake.

Jack Hinshelwood – 3.63
One of the few Brighton players who actually managed to find a fellow blue and white shirt with a pass. The Albion were tight down the right compared to everywhere else on the pitch and that was largely because of Hinshelwood.

Tariq Lamptey – 3.13
Took over from the hapless Estupinan at the break. Missed a big chance to grab a consolation. Another 45 minutes under his belt was at least a positive.

Evan Ferguson – 3.00
De Zerbi opted to change formation with the half time introduction of Ferguson. Don’t think he even touched the ball.

Carlos Baleba – 3.38
With the game done and dusted by half time, Baleba should have come on earlier for the experience of playing against rampant opponents. Showed some nice touches in the minutes he was afforded.

Jakub Moder – 3.50
Probably wishes he was still injured rather than having to come on for 20 minutes on a night like this.
