Spurs 0-1 Brighton: Bissouma back to his brilliant best in player ratings
With just six games of the Premier League season left to play, Spurs 0-1 Brighton was the perfect time for Yves Bissouma to return to his brilliant best, top the player ratings and remind potential summer suitors of just what a talent he is.
Bissouma was outstanding at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, posting the second highest score any Albion player has managed this season.
Only the 9.57 registered by Adam Webster in the 1-1 Amex draw with Chelsea back in January beats Bissouma’s 9.43.
The Malian midfielder was not the only one to shine, of course. Nine of the starting XI achieved marks of above eight for a disciplined display in which Brighton prevented a Spurs side who had been scoring goals for fun from having a single shot on target.
That means these Spurs 0-1 Brighton player ratings make for very pleasant reading.
Robert Sanchez – 8.00
He cannot have expected to be so underemployed against opponents containing the talents of Harry Kane and Son Heung-min. No save of any note to make with his afternoon comprised of collecting a couple of crosses.
Joel Veltman – 9.14
Two moments stood out from the Dutch defender. One involved an excellent block of a Son effort which looked like it might trouble Sanchez. The other was a great recovery tackle on Kane to avert a potentially dangerous situation unfolding.
Lewis Dunk – 9.29
When Dunk is shackling one of the best strikers in the world in Kane as he did to take the second highest score in the Spurs 0-1 Brighton ratings, it makes a real mockery of the fact he only has one England cap to his name. Outstanding.
Marc Cucurella – 8.57
Graham Potter’s decision to start deploying Leandro Trossard as a left wing back means that Cucurella’s attacking output is no longer so missed. Instead, we can all appreciate what a good job he has started doing as one of three centre backs. This was probably his best display in that new role.
Tariq Lamptey – 7.86
Looked better for the rest he was given in last week’s 2-1 win at Arsenal. Did some good work defensively and enjoyed a couple of rampages forward, including one which drew a decent stop from Hugo Lloris.
YVES BISSOUMA – 9.43
One of his best ever displays as a Brighton player. When he turns up in this sort of mood, the Albion can compete with almost any team in the Premier League. Broke up Spurs attacks, never wasted a pass and glided effortlessly past home players with the ball at his feet. A joy to watch.
Moises Caicedo – 8.86
When Bissouma does get sold this summer, then Brighton can at least console themselves with the fact they already appear to have a replacement within their ranks. Caicedo will benefit immeasurably from playing the final two months of this season alongside Bissouma before taking his mantle in 2022-23. The 180 minutes he has put in against Arsenal and Spurs is enough to get everyone excited.
Pascal Gross – 8.71
Created five chances for the Albion, which was more than any other Brighton player and the entire Spurs team combined. Brighton need to do everything in their power to tie Gross down to a new contract.
Leandro Trossard – 9.00
Two outstanding performances from out on the left in which he has scored makes you wonder why it has taken three seasons for Potter to play him as a winger. The goal involved a fantastic piece of skill to weave into the Spurs box followed by a clever, clinical finish with the outside of the boot. Also did some vital defensive work, such as blocking a second half Son effort.
Enock Mwepu – 7.86
Had an early shot deflected behind. After that, he spent most of the first half embarking on a one-man crime spree. That earned him a booking and he was perhaps fortunate that a second did not follow before Potter wisely withdrew him at the interval.
Alexis Mac Allister – 8.43
Put in plenty of effort to make his unfamiliar role as a false nine work in the first half. Dropped back in as a number 10 behind Danny Welbeck in the second half, from where he had a couple of efforts.
Danny Welbeck – 8.00
His introduction for Mwepu provided a focal point for the Brighton attack. The Albion were more of a force going forward with him involved, holding up play and stretching the Spurs defence.
Adam Lallana – 7.57
Played an underrated part in the goal as it was his run with the ball which eventually fell to Trossard to do the rest. Much better than his cameo at Arsenal the previous week.
Solly March – 7.86
Introduced down the right and was quickly involved. Did about as well as could be expected in his 10 minutes on the pitch.
