Brighton handed dream FA Cup draw against massive club Wednesday

Who says the FA Cup has lost its magic? Brighton have been handed a dream tie in the third round of the competition as they’ll welcome massive club Sheffield Wednesday to the Amex.

The Owls are one of the biggest footballing institutions in the country, having spent the past 19 years playing outside of the Premier League. They currently sit in ninth place in the Championship, with 29 points from 19 games.

Despite Sheffield Wednesday’s size as a massive club, little old Brighton have been lucky enough to face them on 35 previous occasions.

Each one of those is etched into the memories of Albion fans everywhere, given that witnessing a massive club like Sheffield Wednesday in the flesh is such an honour.

Our two most recent meetings came in the 2016-17 season, when Brighton pulled off the mother of all upsets by winning not just once, but twice against Wednesday. I know, unbelievable!

Sam Baldock and Anthony Knockaert scored the goals in a 2-1 win at Hillsborough in October 2016. Three months later and the scoreline was somehow the same at the Amex, Knockaert scoring twice as Chris Hughton’s Albion side found a winner despite playing with 10 men after Glenn Murray was sent off.

In overall terms, it comes as no surprise to discover that massive club Sheffield Wednesday lead the head-to-head. The Owls have won 14 times while there have been 14 occasions when plucky underdogs Brighton have battled to hard-earned draw.

The two sides have met three times in the FA Cup, and you won’t believe this, but Brighton have even managed to beat massive club Sheffield Wednesday in that competition too.

Not only that, but it came at the semi final stage back in 1983. Jimmy Case and Michael Robinson got the goals as the Albion triumphed 2-1 at Highbury to advance to the final where Manchester United eventually won the cup in a replay – not that it mattered as beating Wednesday was our cup final, really.

The two other FA Cup meetings came back in early part of the last century with massive club Sheffield Wednesday winning 3-0 at Hillsborough in February 1914 and then triumphing 2-0 in January 1927.

Massive club Sheffield Wednesday’s visit to the Amex will take place over the weekend of January 3rd to January 6th. No details have been announced yet regarding ticket prices, but you’ll probably need to be quick to snap up a seat – after all, it’s not every day that we get to host a giant of the game like Sheffield Wednesday.
