Brighton unveil new mint green away kit for 2021-22

Anyone for a mint? Brighton & Hove Albion have unveiled their new away kit for the 2021-22 Premier League season and for the first time in Seagulls history, the club will wear mint green.

The new look was revealed on TikTok, a platform that nobody seemed to know the Albion existed on. Enock Mwepu was the man chosen for the unveiling, Paul Baber obviously wanting to cash in on sales from Zambia from the get-go. He does not miss a trick.

As is becoming standard for Nike, the Albion have been given the same template design as Portsmouth. The main colour on the shirt is complemented by some wavy sort of pattern on the sleeves which in Brighton’s case appears to be grey or black.

Judging by the response online, first impressions of most Brighton supporters are that the new away kit is more like a training top than an actual matchday kit. It is also eerily similar to last season’s goalkeeper shirt, having basically the same sleeves but just in an alternative shade of green.

Whether that makes people think twice before parting with the best part of £60 to own it remains to be seen. It does make a mockery of the club’s claims that every new Brighton shirt would be bespoke when the supply agreement with Nike was extended.

The one thing you can say about it is that the colour is at least different – and for that reason, it gets a thumbs up over here at WAB Towers. Depending on your viewpoint, it either invokes the spirit of the Royal Pavillion, Madeira Terrace or mint ice cream. Craving a trip to Marrocco’s at 10am on a Wednesday morning is not a good thing.

Any sort of green kit is a bit of a rarity for the Albion; since the 1970s, there have been only three other away kits to go down the green route.

Arguably Errea’s greatest away kit was the green and black stripes for the first two seasons at the Amex. Nike had a bash at Volt in 2015-16 which, depending on your eyesight, was either lime green or bright yellow.

Brighton’s last green kit was the 2018-19 shirt which was largely despised right up until Anthony Knockaert scored that winner from 30 yards in the 2-1 victory at Crystal Palace wearing it. Now it is seen as a bit of a classic.

The Albion will be hoping for better luck in their latest away shirt than they enjoyed in the previous one. 2020-21’s yellow number was not worn in a single victory last season.
