Praise for Johnny & Warren: Thoughts of a 66-year-old first time season ticket holder

Taking a seat in the lounge at home, tuning in to BBC Radio Sussex and hearing Johnny Cantor and Warren Aspinall give us live commentary from Cardiff City on Tuesday night was as usual up to its great standard.

It is always wonderful to hear them both when you cannot view the game. Two of our Radio Sussex stalwarts providing a service which we are lucky to have. Long may it continue.

Well, we did not have to wait very long for the lounge settee springs to take a real bashing when Jakub Moder scored the Albion’s first goal within the first 10 minutes of the game.

Extra loud chanting from the dedicated away supporters could be heard over the airwaves as Moder, according to Warren, made a great run and slotted the ball through the legs of the Cardiff City goalkeeper to put Brighton 1-0 ahead in the first 10 minutes of the game.

I then let my blood pressure regain normality and continued intently listening to Johnny and Warren. Cardiff City may have had streakers invade their pitch but it was a young Albion side who were streaks ahead of the Bluebirds.

Despite several interruptions on the pitch by Cardiff’s well-oiled supporters, some 15 minutes into the second half it was the turn of Andy Zeqiri to score from 14 yards out.

Aptly commentated on by Johnny, once e again the settee springs took a hammering as I leapt up and down. My wife thought I was having a funny turn!

The commentary said that as the game wore on, a few times Cardiff appeared to have the Albion a little on the back foot. According to Warren, there was a bit of head tennis going on in the last seven minutes of the game inside our penalty box, which was a little worrying as a listener.

I was so hoping captain Jason Steele could keep a clean sheet, which he did. It sounded as if he played a blinder with a very young back four in front of him.

My settee springs could do with a little bit of a rest after the excitement of Cardiff 0-2 Brighton, so thank goodness it is another home game this Saturday against Everton.

Let us hope that the Amex has Wine Gums back in stock, that we can see off Rafa Benitez and his squad and continue with this amazing start to the 2021-22 season.
