Remaining goals for Brighton

This time of year can be a little anticlimactic, particularly when we happen to have seen one of the great performances in EPL history.

Manchester City as the best ever Premier League team is a subject that’s actually being seriously written about, and while that doesn’t really affect a team like Brighton with little chance of winning the EPL, it takes some of the fun out of the season. We all knew months ago which team was going to come out on top – it was just a matter of when it would become official.

From the Brighton perspective though there are four matches left to play, and Seagulls supporters aren’t checking out simply because the cup has been won. For that reason we’re going to take stock of what remains and look at a few remaining goals on the season.

Avoiding Relegation
Most of us seem to think relegation isn’t really on the table. But technically, going by the actual table, it is. Until relegation is a mathematical impossibility, this counts as a goal. For instance, if Southampton rattled off four wins, Swansea three, and Brighton lost out, we’d finish with Southampton at 41 points, Swansea 42, and Brighton 36.

A Top-10 Finish
A top-10 finish is actually a pretty valuable distinction, and not just by supporter standards. Did you know, for instance, that teams finishing in the top 10 is one of the most popular preseason punts in betting markets? In sports, that matters, and it makes it a genuine mark of success in the eyes of even neutral observers. Currently at 13th with a very tough schedule remaining, Brighton is a long shot for the top 10 – but there’s a chance!

Two wins and two draws to finish
Fulfilling this goal would mean one more incredible win to go with that Arsenal victory before the 2017-18 season comes to a close. The remaining fixtures include Burnley, Man Utd., Man City, and Liverpool – all top 7 teams. Burnley is at least a winnable match on paper, and winning that and one more against a powerhouse would make for a very satisfactory wrap-up to the season.

Topping Crystal Palace
This goes without saying, but it would be wonderful to finish ahead of Crystal Palace with things so tight. As of this writing, Brighton is a point clear, but the aforementioned remaining fixtures make this something of a tall order.

Top-10 Scoring For Murray
We don’t tend to talk too much about leading scorers beyond the top spot, particularly this year with the sensational emergence of Mohamed Salah. But take a look at the top scorers and you’ll see our own Glenn Murray with a very strong shot at finishing in the top 10. That would be a nice personal accolade, and certainly something for supporters to celebrate.
