Brighton release new home kit which looks like a blue cape

Brighton & Hove Albion have released their new home kit for the 2023-24 season and in shocking news, it is blue and white stripes.

The most notable aspect of the shirt is that the shoulders and collar make it appear as though the wearer has a blue cape around their neck.

Did Nike take inspiration from a Batman fancy dress outfit when spending what mUst have been all of 15 minutes coming up with the design?

The stripes return to thinner blue and white after last year’s wide effort. Also gone is the yellow line down the middle, which Nike described as piping but others declared reminiscent of a trail of piss in snow.

With blue sleeves, blue shorts and blue socks, blue is very much the dominant colour. The only significant white space appears on the back, blocking out the area where names and numbers are printed.

The kit is made from recycled polyester fibres and Nike Dri-FIT technology, whatever that means. For the larger man, a loose fit is available.

Those thinner stripes also make the wearer appear slimmer, which is good news for those of us Albion fans of a slightly rotund nature.

Brighton will be pleased that they have managed to avoid any leaks of the new home kit this year. Last season saw an eagle-eyed Albion supporter spot a trading card on the Panini website featuring Neal Maupay wearing the shirt.

The kit was plastered all over Twitter and North Stand Chat long before Fatboy Slim could wear it for what was meant to be the official unveiling at the On The Beach festival.

To make the inadvertent leak on the Panini website even better, most Brighton fans said the Maupay trading card could not be real as there was no way Nike would design such a shit shirt. Turns out they would, folks…

In fairness, the 2022-23 Albion shirt which looked like a motorway sign grew on a lot of supporters by the end of the season.

The design did not appear anywhere near as bad when worn by the players, whilst a record-breaking sixth place finish helped turn the tide of public opinion.

And in any case, these days it does not really matter how crap a kit is. According to the club, every shirt Nike have released has beaten the sales record of the previous one.

With a global fanbase, Europa League football and thousands of Japanese supporters in particular flocking to the Amex every home game, Brighton could release a brown and pink striped home shirt with orange sleeves and it would still sell out.

The 2022-23 Albion home shirt will set an adult back £60 with kid’s priced at £45. Cost of living crisis, what cost of living crisis?
